Updated: Land warning issued for Tropical Storm Nesat

A land warning has been issued for Tropical Storm Nesat (尼莎), which is on track to make landfall in Eastern Taiwan tomorrow.

Weather authorities made the announcement at 2:30 p.m., advising residents in Hualien, Taitung (including Orchid Island and Green Island) to be on guard for strong winds and rainfall.

The storm is gaining strength and should become a Moderate Typhoon by Friday evening, Central Weather Bureau forecaster Wu Wan-hua (伍婉華).

Nesat will bring intermittent showers along the East Coast and push wind speeds as high as 88 kph in north, southeast and central parts of Taiwan Friday afternoon, the weather bureau said.

Its worst effects are expected from Saturday to Monday morning, with strong winds and rainfall across Taiwan.

The weather agency had issued a sea warning at 8:30 a.m., saying rough seas were expected in the Bashi Channel, southeastern Taiwan (including Green Island) and the northeast.

Premier Lin Chuan was seen at the Central Weather Bureau's headquarters for a briefing on storm preparations, which are aimed at preventing loss of life in the east and agricultural damage in Central and Southern Taiwan.

At 11 a.m., Nesat was located about 500 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan's southernmost point of Eluanbi and moving in a southwesterly directly at 16 kilometers an hour.
