Taiwan to launch job card to help young people find work

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- In order to combat youth unemployment, the government is planning to launch a job card that provides access to career counseling, vocational training and job introduction, the Ministry of Labor announced Thursday.

According to government statistics, the unemployment rate in March was 3.78 percent, but among those 20-25 and 25-29 the jobless rate was 12.37 percent and 6.64 percent respectively.

To actively help young people find jobs, the ministry has decided to adopt a system similar to Japan's "Job card system." The new program will initially target long-term unemployed youth.

More details will be unveiled by the end of the year, the ministry said, though it did reveal that the card will incorporate career counseling and vocational training, as well as bringing businesses and the jobless together to help young people determine a career direction.

The card will not only enable young people to learn about and develop their marketable strengths, it will also help the ministry better understand the core reasons for long-term unemployment.
